Bungoma Leaders Urged to Address Challenges Facing Persons with Disabilities

As the globe marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, attention has been drawn to the plight of individuals with disabilities in Bungoma County, who continue to face exclusion and systemic barriers.

Adrian Sakwa, chair of the Disability Empowerment Network, decried the underrepresentation of persons with disabilities in leadership and decision-making, with only 30% of this group being involved in such processes. He emphasized the need for inclusivity, calling on the government to ensure equitable opportunities and access to essential services for persons with disabilities.

Sakwa highlighted the importance of creating an environment that fosters empowerment and participation, urging stakeholders to address the disparities that hinder this marginalized group from fully contributing to society.

As the county joins the world in observing this critical day, the call for action underscores the urgent need for policies and initiatives that promote equity, accessibility, and respect for the rights of persons with disabilities.
