Kakamega Launches SGBV Act and Kicks Off 16 Days of Activism

Deputy Governor Ayub Savula has officially launched the 16 Days of Activism Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and the Kakamega County SGBV Act, 2024, at the County Headquarters. This landmark legislation makes Kakamega the first county in Kenya to enact a law specifically addressing SGBV.

Speaking during the event, Savula emphasized the county’s commitment to ending SGBV and protecting the rights of vulnerable groups. He noted that the enactment of the Kakamega County SGBV Act is a major step towards creating a safer and more equitable society.

“This Act will not only provide a framework for addressing cases of sexual and gender-based violence but also ensure that survivors have access to justice and the necessary support services,” he stated.

The SGBV Act outlines measures for prevention, response, and rehabilitation for survivors of violence, while also strengthening legal mechanisms to hold perpetrators accountable.

The launch of the 16 Days of Activism highlights Kakamega County’s efforts to raise awareness about SGBV, with stakeholders and residents coming together to promote education, advocacy, and the enforcement of protective measures.

Savula urged residents, local leaders, and community organizations to take an active role in supporting the implementation of the SGBV Act and ensuring that its provisions are fully realized.

Kakamega’s historic move sets a precedent for other counties to prioritize the fight against SGBV through legislation and community engagement
