Hon. Catherine Omanyo, the Woman Representative of Busia County, has spearheaded a jiggers eradication campaign in Butula Constituency, focusing on supporting neglected elderly residents. The initiative aims to address the physical and social challenges faced by the aged, many of whom are battling infestations in dire living conditions.
During her visit, Hon. Omanyo encountered tragic stories, including the heartbreaking case of an elderly woman who was raped and murdered by her 18-year-old neighbor. The incident underscored the vulnerabilities faced by the elderly and the urgent need for community action to protect and care for them.
Expressing concern over the neglect of senior citizens, Hon. Omanyo emphasized the importance of collective responsibility. “We must do more to ensure the safety and dignity of our elderly population,” she urged.
As part of her efforts, Hon. Omanyo’s office announced plans to begin fumigating affected homes to combat jigger infestations and restore healthy living conditions. The initiative is a critical step toward improving hygiene and reducing the suffering caused by the parasitic menace.
Hon. Omanyo’s campaign highlights the broader need for community-driven solutions to protect vulnerable populations and ensure the elderly are treated with the respect and care they deserve.
