Security Department Bans Muguka Sales in Sirisia Constituency Over Rising Crime

The Security Department in Sirisia Constituency, Bungoma County, has imposed a ban on the sale and use of muguka, citing its role in fueling criminal activities in the area.

Addressing the press, Ali Muhamud, the Bungoma West Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the Constituency’s Security Committee, announced that all shops selling muguka must cease operations immediately. Muhamud expressed concern over the growing accessibility of the substance, which has reportedly lured schoolchildren into addiction while contributing to an upsurge in crime.

“The freedom to sell and use muguka has caused significant harm to this community, particularly among the youth, including schoolchildren, who have become addicted. This has also escalated criminal behavior in the area,” said Muhamud.

He urged boda boda operators to adhere strictly to traffic regulations during the festive season to ensure safety on the roads. The Deputy Commissioner highlighted the need for responsibility among riders, given their critical role in public transport during the busy Christmas period.

Additionally, Muhamud directed chiefs and their assistants to enforce strict measures against the controversial disco matanga ceremonies. These late-night funeral gatherings, often accompanied by loud music and revelry, have been associated with heightened cases of insecurity, moral decay, and disruption within the community.

The crackdown on muguka and other activities is part of a broader effort by local authorities to enhance security and curb societal vices in Sirisia Constituency during the holiday season. Residents have been urged to cooperate with security personnel to restore peace and order in the region.

The directive has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising the efforts to safeguard community welfare, while others have called for alternative solutions to address the root causes of crime and addiction among the youth.
