Activists, non-governmental organizations, and residents of Vihiga County recently organized a peace walk from Majengo to the Vihiga County Court to raise awareness and protest the alarming rise in cases of gender-based violence, particularly the killing of women.
Following the walk, a sensitization meeting on gender-based violence (GBV) revealed that 91% of murder cases currently being handled by the Vihiga court are linked to domestic conflicts.
Speaking during the meeting, Vihiga Magistrate Jacqueline Kamau expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of GBV in the county, noting that a significant number involve organized gangs perpetrating acts of sexual violence, including rape.
“Gender-based violence cases in Vihiga are alarmingly high, particularly those involving domestic disputes and gang-related sexual violence. This is a serious issue that must be addressed urgently,” Magistrate Kamau stated.
The event also served as a platform for stakeholders to call for increased vigilance and community participation in reporting GBV incidents. Residents were urged to break the silence and report such cases to authorities to ensure timely intervention and justice for the victims.
The peace walk and awareness campaign highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing the root causes of gender-based violence. Stakeholders pledged to work together to promote education, create safe spaces for victims, and enhance the enforcement of laws protecting vulnerable groups in the community.
Organizers reiterated the need for sustainable measures to combat GBV, including community-based initiatives and counseling programs to address underlying societal and domestic challenges contributing to the violence.
