Former employees of Mumias Sugar Factory have called on President William Ruto to honor his promises regarding their benefits, which he has made repeatedly during visits to Western Kenya. During a recent tour in Kwisero Constituency, Kakamega County, the President urged sugarcane farmers to remain resilient, assuring them of improved payments expected to start next year.
This statement has brought renewed hope to sugarcane farmers in the region, raising expectations for better days ahead. Patrick Mutimba, chairman of the former employees' union at the Mumias Sugar Company, emphasized the importance of following through on this commitment, stressing how critical it is to the livelihood of many in the area.
Farmers in the region have welcomed the government’s efforts to revive the once-thriving factory, seeing it as a potential game-changer for the local economy. They’ve also been encouraged to continue planting sugarcane in anticipation of a stronger market and stable payments in the near future.
The revival of Mumias Sugar Factory could play a key role in transforming the lives of thousands of farmers, workers, and the community as a whole, restoring the factory’s position as a significant contributor to the economy of Western Kenya
