Residents of Ikhamala, Senyende, and Ivochio in Kakamega County took to the streets on Friday, November 29, 2024, to protest against the poor state of their roads.
Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the frustrated locals marched from Ikhamala through Senyende Primary School and Ivochio, ending their demonstration at the office of Murhanda Ward MCA, Elphas Shilosio.
In a unique display of anger, the residents planted banana trees in the middle of the damaged roads to show how useless the roads had become. “If the roads can’t be used by vehicles, maybe they are meant for farming,” said one protestor sarcastically.
The residents complained that the county government has ignored their pleas for years. With heavy rains making the roads even worse, they fear the situation will become unbearable.
“We are tired of empty promises. Leaders must fix these roads so we can go about our daily lives without suffering,” another protestor said.
At the MCA's office, the group demanded urgent action to repair the roads and ensure better maintenance in the future. They called on the county government to take their concerns seriously, saying good roads are essential for schools, businesses, and transport.
The banana trees planted on the roads remain a powerful reminder of the community's frustrations, urging leaders to act quickly to solve the problem.
