Kakamega County Hosts 11th Edition of KICOSCA Games

Kakamega County has officially kicked off the 11th Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) Games, a week-long event bringing together participants from all 47 counties. Governor Fernandes Barasa expressed pride in hosting the prestigious championship, noting that Kakamega won the hosting rights over Mombasa and Nyeri counties.

Speaking at the Mumias Sports Complex after inspecting the county's preparations, Governor Barasa highlighted the event's significance in uniting the nation through sports and culture. “This competition is not just about sports; it is an opportunity to showcase vibrant cultural performances and foster community cohesion,” he said.

Accompanied by KICOSCA National Chairman John Ang’awa, the Governor emphasized Kakamega's potential to become Kenya’s next investment hub. Both leaders encouraged counties to fully participate, ensuring a vibrant event that celebrates the diversity and talent of Kenya.

Sports and Cultural Highlights

The festival features a wide array of disciplines, including:

  • Sports: Football, handball, basketball, netball, squash, badminton, volleyball, chess, darts, pool, table tennis, golf, and tug of war.
  • Games: Scrabble and ajua.
  • Cultural Events: Choir competitions and cultural dance performances.

Nairobi County, the reigning champions, will defend its title against formidable challengers such as Kakamega, Kisumu, and Uasin Gishu. Last year in Meru, Nairobi dominated disciplines like darts, squash, table tennis, volleyball, and basketball.

Boost for Local Economy

Governor Barasa urged local businesses and women entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity presented by the influx of participants and spectators to Kakamega. “This is a perfect platform to showcase Kakamega’s ability to host national and international events, while boosting our local economy and strengthening the hospitality industry,” he stated.

Beyond the Games

Participants and visitors have been invited to explore Kakamega’s unique tourist attractions, including:

  • Kakamega Tropical Rainforest: Renowned for its diverse wildlife and serene nature trails.
  • The Crying Stone of Ilesi: An iconic natural formation steeped in cultural significance.
  • The Wanga Cultural Centre: A rich historical and cultural heritage site.

As a symbolic gesture, Governor Barasa received a chain and torch from West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin, the Chair of the Council of Governors Sports and Culture Committee, marking the official transfer of KICOSCA patronage from Meru to Kakamega County.

This year’s KICOSCA Games promise not only thrilling sports and cultural showcases but also an opportunity to solidify Kakamega’s position as a vibrant hub for talent, culture, and economic growth.
