Boda Boda Riders in Busia Urged to Work With Security Teams to Enhance Safety

Western Regional Commissioner Irungu Macharia has called on boda boda operators to collaborate with security agencies to boost safety in the region. Speaking at a sensitization forum in Busia, Macharia acknowledged the critical role boda boda riders play, noting their long hours and access to areas often unreachable by security officers.

“We appreciate your efforts in maintaining peace and security in your areas of operation,” he said, pledging that the government will strengthen its partnership with boda boda leadership at all levels.

Macharia urged security officers to handle information shared by the riders with confidentiality to protect them from potential threats by suspects. He also reminded riders to follow traffic rules, carry only one passenger, and ensure they have helmets, insurance, and riding licenses.

To improve identification and coordination, the government plans to launch a digital registration system for boda boda operators. Macharia emphasized the need for this collaboration to curb human trafficking, drug trade, and illicit brews along the border.

Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya National Chairman Kevin Mubadi echoed these sentiments, assuring that the sector is committed to supporting security efforts. Mubadi also encouraged riders to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) for access to health services.

The forum brought together the Western Regional Security Team and boda boda leaders, reinforcing the importance of teamwork in enhancing regional security and improving the welfare of operators.
