Matunda Township Elevated to Municipality Status as Kakamega Eyes City Status by 2032

Matunda Township, the second-highest generator of Own-Source Revenue in Kakamega County after Kakamega Municipality, has officially been elevated to Municipality status. Governor Fernandes Barasa conferred the Municipality Charter to Matunda today under Section 4 of the Kakamega County Urban Areas Management Act, 2017.

This milestone positions Matunda alongside Butere and Malava, unlocking numerous benefits, including enhanced infrastructure, improved amenities, increased investor interest, and expanded budgetary allocations. These changes are expected to drive transformative growth and improve the quality of life for residents.

“This elevation is not just about status but about opening doors for greater opportunities and development. Matunda’s potential as an economic hub will now be fully realized,” Governor Barasa remarked during the event.

Attention now turns to the county’s ambitious vision of elevating Kakamega Municipality to city status by 2032. Governor Barasa affirmed that the foundation for this goal has already been laid, signaling a brighter future for Kakamega as it continues its journey toward becoming a model of urban growth and development.
