As ODM grassroots elections take place across the country today, some supporters in Mumias East Constituency, Kakamega County, have raised concerns over the transparency of the process, claiming they were excluded from participating as expected.
Led by Omar Amukoya and Sophia Manyasa, disgruntled members alleged that despite arriving early at polling stations, no voting activities were conducted. They speculated that the exercise may have taken place in undisclosed locations or private venues, excluding many legitimate party members.
“We came early, ready to cast our votes, but no election was conducted at the polling stations,” said Amukoya. “It’s possible the process was held elsewhere without involving us as members.”
On the other hand, a faction led by ODM chairmanship candidate for the constituency, Godfrey Opondo, and member Samson Juma, confirmed that the election did take place and was conducted transparently. However, they acknowledged confusion over the timing of the exercise, which caused delays and frustration among members.
“There was transparency in the election process, but confusion regarding the start and end times created unnecessary tension,” said Opondo.
Members have pointed fingers at the ODM constituency office, accusing it of poor coordination and lack of communication. They cited last-minute changes to polling times as a significant factor contributing to the disenfranchisement of many members.
“The alteration of voting schedules made it impossible for some of us to exercise our democratic right,” complained one member.
