Farmers in Bungoma County have been encouraged to venture into Hass avocado farming, a high-demand crop with immense potential to transform their livelihoods. This was the key message delivered by Albert Serengo, the Deputy Chairperson of Naima Farmers Cooperative Society, during a ceremony held in Makunga, Tongaren, where 1,500 avocado seedlings were distributed to local farmers.
The initiative is part of a three-year project funded by the World Bank, aimed at promoting agribusiness as a means of enhancing farmers’ income and boosting the local economy. Speaking at the event, Mr. Serengo highlighted the growing global demand for Hass avocados, particularly in international markets such as Europe and the Middle East, as a prime opportunity for farmers to diversify and maximize their earnings.
“This is not just a crop; it is a pathway to financial independence for farmers in Bungoma,” Mr. Serengo said. “With its high market value and rising demand, Hass avocado farming offers a sustainable solution to many economic challenges faced by rural communities.”
The project seeks to equip farmers with the tools and knowledge to cultivate Hass avocados effectively, ensuring high yields and quality produce. Farmers receiving the seedlings were urged to adopt best farming practices, including proper soil management, pest control, and the use of organic fertilizers. These efforts are expected to position Bungoma as a key player in Kenya’s avocado export market.
In his address, Mr. Serengo also emphasized the importance of collective action through cooperatives such as Naima Farmers Cooperative Society. “Collaboration among farmers is crucial. It strengthens bargaining power, enhances access to markets, and allows the sharing of resources and expertise,” he said.
The distribution of seedlings was met with enthusiasm, with farmers expressing hope for improved earnings and economic stability. Eunice Nasimiyu, one of the beneficiaries, lauded the initiative and committed to making the most of the opportunity. “This project is a game-changer for us. We are ready to work hard and ensure its success,” she said.
As Bungoma embraces Hass avocado farming, the county stands on the brink of an economic transformation. By leveraging this high-value crop, farmers can not only uplift their own lives but also contribute to the broader economic development of the region.
